Ford Reincarnates Mustang Bullitt For 50th Anniversary
Darrell Behmer, chief designer for the Mustang, says the 2019 Bullitt "... doesn't need to scream about anything - it's just cool". And he's right. Look at the front end with no Pony or blue oval badge. See how the side is devoid of the 5.0 designation. And in the back the trunk lid is not home to a bench-seat sized spoiler. In fact, there is no spoiler because the original Bullitt didn't have one. The only way to know this is a special edition Mustang is either the Dark Highland Green paint, vintage-look wheels, or Bullitt rear logo. You don't have to be a gearhead to appreciate the subtle and not-so-subtle confidence Ford exudes five decades after their big score from the 1968 film.
But there are under the hood details gearheads will enjoy. The 5.0-liter normally aspirated V-8 Coyote engine, for example, has been partially modified to squeeze out more power. Ford added a Shelby GT350 intake manifold, larger throttle body, open air induction system, and modified powertrain control module for a total of 475 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. The additional 15 horses enable the Mustang Bullitt to reach an unlimited 168 mph top speed.
Ford also included a Premium pack and Performance Pack 1 as standard. The Performance pack adds 6-piston front Brembo brakes, bigger front springs, upgraded radiator, larger rear sway bar, K-brace, and rear Torsen limited slip differential. We know it doesn't have Performance Pack 2 because the tires are 255/40 R19 and 275/40 R19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S instead of the larger 305 section Cup 2s. Magnetorheological dampers are optional.
Inside the cabin the Mustang Bullitt is mostly similar to an off-the-lot Mustang GT. Green contrast stitching lines the interior, and a Bullitt logo is placed on the steering wheel. You're reminded you're in a Bullitt Mustang a second time when you turn the car on a Bullitt welcome screen is shown on the 12-inch digital gauge cluster. If you want blind spot alert, cross traffic alert, seat and mirror memory, and navigation you'll need to pay extra for a Bullitt electronics package. Trimming the Recaro seats in leather also requires a few more dollar bills. Black NitroPlate exhaust tips that give the car a more muscle-car tone is included.
Normally, whenever Ford makes a special edition Mustang it's ostentatious and ghastly. We're happy they did the opposite.
Price and availability to be announced.
